Candle/Flower Breathing

This activity is a fantastic one to help calm children and teach them to control their breathing.

Children will need to find a comfortable sitting position. Ask them to hold their hands, palms facing upwards, just below shoulder height in front of their chest. Hands can be slightly apart. Now ask them to imagine that in their left hand they are holding a beautiful scented flower and in their right hand a candle.

Ask them to take a breath in through their nose and imagine that they are breathing in the scent of the flower. Now ask them to breathe out, using a soft breath and imagine they are gently blowing out the candle. Repeat this for 10 breaths.

This encourages the out breath to be controlled and gentle

* A variation is to do it the exercise with their eyes closed.
